Professional teeth whitening in Durban North

Lighten the natural shade of your teeth in about an hour in the chair, with your teeth and gums checked first.

Professional whitening lifts the yellowing that comes with age and the staining from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking that brushing can't shift. You see your new shade before you leave.

What whitening changes

A teeth cleaning (scaling and polishing) takes off tartar and the stain on the surface of your teeth; whitening lightens the colour of the tooth itself. If surface stain is most of the problem, a clean may be all you need.

Whitening works on natural teeth only. Fillings, crowns, veneers and bonding keep their shade, so tooth-coloured fillings on your front teeth may need redoing afterwards to match.

When whitening is a good fit

Whitening suits healthy teeth and gums. Wait before whitening if:

  • you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • you have decay or gum problems that haven't been treated yet (we treat these first)

How in-chair whitening is done

  1. Step 1: Book

Send us a WhatsApp with a day that suits you, and we confirm a time.

  2. Step 2: Check first

We check your teeth and gums, ask about sensitivity and note your starting shade with a shade guide.

  3. Step 3: Protect and whiten

Your gums and lips are covered, then the whitening gel goes on your teeth for set periods.

  4. Step 4: Your new shade

We compare your new shade with your starting one and tell you what to avoid eating and drinking straight afterwards.

How whitening feels

There's no drilling: the gel sits on the surface of your teeth. Afterwards some people notice sensitivity, especially to cold, or mild gum irritation, which usually passes. If it bothers you or doesn't settle, call 031 563 2473 or send us a WhatsApp message.

Investing in your smile

You can pay for teeth whitening by card or cash, or ask about paying in instalments. If you're weighing up a home kit or a salon, our guide shows how the whitening options and their costs compare.

How long whitening lasts

Results usually last several years; the UK's NHS puts it at around three if you follow the aftercare advice. Whitening fades sooner if you smoke or often drink tea, coffee or red wine.

Looking after whitened teeth

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and clean between your teeth every day.
  • Keep up regular teeth cleaning to remove new surface stain before it builds up.

Whitening, bonding or veneers

For a chip, a gap, a new shape or one tooth darker than the rest, composite bonding or composite veneers are the better choice, because composite covers the tooth rather than changing its colour. If you'd like both, we whiten first and match the composite to your new shade; planned together, they make up a composite smile makeover.

Questions

Your questions about teeth whitening

Yes, when your teeth and gums are checked first and a registered dental professional does the whitening, as we do here.

The American Dental Association notes that whitening may change the surface texture of enamel and may affect how well composite bonds to it afterwards. If whitening isn't right for your teeth, we'll tell you.

It depends on whether your teeth need a clean or other treatment first, and we give you the cost when we check your teeth. Medical aid usually doesn't cover whitening, because it's cosmetic.

Durban Dental Care does professional in-chair teeth whitening in Durban North, and the whitening itself takes about an hour. Call 031 563 2473 or send a WhatsApp to book.
