Fillings

Understanding Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are a restorative treatment done to treat the presence of cavities in our teeth. The severity of a cavity may vary from mild to severe. After taking the necessary x-rays, your dentist will determine the areas of decay and if it is viable for you to have a filling done. The purpose of the filling is to seal a tooth after decay has been removed, to prevent nerve exposure/infection, which can become extremely painful, and ultimately restore function of the tooth.

Importance of Fillings

A cavity may cause symptoms, such as pain or sensitivity, depending on its severity. Other times, a cavity may not present with any symptoms, but can be picked up by your dentist on a routine checkup. It is for this reason we emphasize the importance of regular checkups, as we may be able to save a tooth before symptoms become severe.

Procedure Details

Your dentist will assess the cavity and the tooth to determine the appropriate type of filling for you. Before a filling can be done, local anesthesia may be administered to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the procedure. The next step would be to sufficiently clean out decay and prepare the space for the filling. Thereafter, the appropriate choice of filling material is placed in the cavity and shaped to the contours of the tooth. The filling would also require adjusting and polishing to ensure a smooth and non-irritating surface and comfortable bite.

Importance of Early Treatment

Fillings are an absolutely necessary treatment in patients who present with cavities significant enough to lead to further tooth damage. Restorative treatment, if done early enough, can help avoid the complete loss/removal of teeth.
