Understanding Fissure Sealants
Fissure sealants are a preventive treatment typically administered in children to prevent cavities, although they can also be applied to healthy adult teeth, particularly the molars and premolars. This treatment derives its name from the grooves and pits on our back teeth, known as ‘fissures’. These fissures can easily trap food and bacteria, leading to decay. However, when fissure sealants are applied to these teeth while still healthy, the seal acts as a barrier, preventing food traps and reducing the likelihood of needing fillings later on.
Treatment Process
The process of applying fissure sealants is quick, easy, and most importantly, pain-free. The tooth is first prepared using an etching gel, after which a protective resin-based sealant is flowed into the fissures and hardened into place. This treatment typically lasts for a few years but can be redone over time if wear occurs due to eating or biting.

Importance of Early Treatment
The key to success with fissure sealants is to have the treatment done early enough. Once decay occurs, fillings or further treatment may be necessary. While the fissure sealant’s job is to protect our teeth from the risk of decay, it is important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine, including brushing and flossing, to ensure optimal dental health and hygiene.
